SJMC Summer 2023 Worship Series: “Follow the Breadcrumbs”
Overview: The breadcrumb that inspired this series came from a collection of sermons called Always A Guest by Barbara Brown Taylor. In a sermon called “Follow the Bread,” she shows how bread stories in the bible lead us to God, the source of life. For our summer worship series we will follow this trail of breadcrumb stories in the bible to see where we are led and how we are fed.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled,” Jesus says in Luke 6:21.
The series begins with hunger–both physical and spiritual. As we follow the breadcrumbs of stories through the bible, we will connect to the very real hungers in us and in our world.
Throughout the summer, we will explore various biblical stories and themes about bread. People in the congregation will share “bread stories”–experiences of sharing bread or sharing communion. Several related themes may nourish and inspire us, including:
- Trust in God to provide
- Call to community, hospitality and generosity
- Extravagance and abundance
- Justice and enough for all
- Gratitude
- Sharing bread for the world
